“Alternate facts” and buying espresso gear

We live in a world these days where information too frequently comes to us via alternate facts”. If the truth impacts on the bottom line and is questioned, then it can only be “fake news”.

Fake information sadly exists also for those wishing to purchase an espresso machine. For some sellers, it’s all about the sale and in no way would an alternate story be considered unethical should it impact on a potential sale.

Is this a concern? I just want an espresso machine!

This is a concern to us: If you purchase a refrigerator from a whitegoods store, you know that you are possibly better researched than the salesperson. If something goes wrong, you will most likely be dealing with the manufacturer.

With prosumer espresso gear, it’s different…

If something goes wrong, it will likely mean a trip back to the business you have purchased your machine from. There is a possibility that the person who sold your machine to you might actually be doing the repair or service. This issue here is that if s/he has provided you with alternate facts when you purchased, how can the correct repair occur? It’s important that the seller and repairer have a good idea of how their gear operates.

In the last week, there has been lots of “fake espresso machine news” available for you in your home via a click at end of your browser. Amongst the best we read was that some pump driven e-61 espresso machines can miraculously produce espresso without running the pump. Who cares about the laws of Physics? We call that an alternate fact! It’s alarming when patently incorrect information is provided by resellers who aim to “big-note” themselves.

So what’s the lesson?

The lesson in this is that when you buy espresso gear, you need the seller to understand what they sell so that you can be sure that you have purchased what you think you did and also so that you can be sure that you will receive high quality support should something go wrong.

Caveat emptor rules. Be sure that you purchase from a reputable company so that you don’t end up with a carton of snake oil.
