The Linea mini is not a machine which I rate particularly highly out of the box. There are plenty of far better options which offer superior performance and functionality at similar prices- but that’s what LM do. Maximum dollar for minimum specification.
This particular machine started life as a write-off when one of our lovely Aussie delivery companies seemingly kicked it out of the truck and then attempted to deliver it inverted on said skid to its new owner- who rightly rejected the delivery. It was absolutely ruined.
The keen eye of my great friend Rick @coffeemachinist saw a potential rebirth and a with a truck-load of replacement parts and a year of planning and hundreds of hours of work, it reemerged from the cocoon to become a unicorn. It’s the most expensive machine I have ever owned: One of those “If you have to ask” price tags.
Lever operated steam and hot-water valves (They said it couldn’t be done!) and a variable speed gear pump created a drive-by-wire, pressure profiling unicorn which in my opinion may never be bettered.
Rick’s incredible talent is every where you look- from intricate hand-made custom gauges to beautiful, tactile touch points and a carefully considered, stunning colour palette.
I sold another unicorn (a unique GS3 EMP which will never be repeated) from the hand of Rick to have this daily driver which brings great pleasure every time I touch it. At home, it’s paired with a Mahlkönig E65S GBW on grind duty and I couldn’t be happier.
